Child Taken by “The Boogeyman”

Billy Jones Jr. before his strange disappearance in 1962.

William Ebenezer "Billy" Jones Jr. vanished on December 17, 1962, while playing outdoors with his younger sister, Jill. When they were supposed to come back home, only Jill returned, clutching a plastic potted poinsettia and claiming that her brother had been taken by "the boogeyman."

The Disappearance of Billy Jones Jr.

Billy was a happy little boy living in Vineland, New Jersey. He loved dogs, reading, and toy cars. He was almost 4 years old when he disappeared.

On the morning of the day he went missing, Billy, his sister Jill, and their mom went out to do some chores like going to the bank and getting Billy a haircut. Everything seemed normal.

Around 11:45 AM, Billy, Jill, and their two dogs started playing in the snow outside their home. That was the last time anyone but Jill saw Billy.

Between 11:45 AM and 1:00 PM, their mom checked on them from time to time while she looked after their baby brother and made lunch. But when she went to check on Billy again, he was gone.

At 1:00 PM, Jill was found near the front door holding a fake poinsettia. When asked where Billy was, she said "the boogeyman" took him.

Shortly after 1:00 PM, Billy's mom looked around the neighborhood for him. A stranger in a green car asked if she was Mrs. Jones, but she didn't recognise him, so she didn't respond.

Around 2:00 PM, when they couldn't find Billy after an hour of searching, they called the police. The police, along with the National Guard and search dogs, looked everywhere, but they couldn't find him. They searched rivers, forests, and even an old amusement area called the Palace, but Billy was nowhere to be found.

The investigation into the Disappearance of Billy Jones Jr.

In the wake of Billy's inexplicable disappearance, his sister Jill emerged holding a plastic poinsettia, attributing it to a gift from Billy. Initial suspicion swirled around a nearby vendor of artificial flowers, yet subsequent investigation revealed the flower originated from a neighboring trash can, and it was no longer considered relevant to the investigation.

A concerted search effort unfolded, mobilizing law enforcement, firefighters, military personnel, and volunteers, scouring the vicinity, including the adjacent river.

The investigation extended to the infamous nearby building dubbed the “Palace of Depression,” a structure fashioned from discarded junk in the 1930s. Despite its dilapidated state at the time of Billy's disappearance, it became a focal point of the investigation.

Aerial reconnaissance and canine search teams were deployed in the quest for Billy. Even the family's pet, Baby, briefly went missing before reappearing, soaking wet and distressed. Hypotheses regarding Billy's potential entrapment within a trash bin or the grim possibility of foul play were contemplated but ultimately yielded no substantial breakthroughs.

During the investigation, the Jones family consulted a local clairvoyant, who suggested Billy may have been abducted by a grief-stricken mother. Subsequent psychic consultations in 1964 yielded another theory, suggesting Billy's may have been killed by a vehicle and his body taken by the culprit. Despite such leads, corroborating evidence proved elusive.

In a bid to unearth buried recollections, Jill underwent hypnosis in the 1980s, which unveiled fragmented memories of a scuffle witnessed near a roaring fire.

Billy's case is still a mystery. People now think he was probably taken by someone or hurt by someone else, rather than wandering away by himself. In 2009, they tried again to solve the case using new technology, but they still haven't found any clues about what happened to him.

Who was the Boogeyman?

Goya's Que viene el Coco' ("Here Comes the Boogeyman / The Boogeyman is Coming"), c. 1797

It is most likely that the “boogeyman” mentioned by Billy’s sister was just a nefarious human being who kidnapped Billy. If we suspend disbelief for a moment however, if a paranormal creature were to abduct a child, would the situation not play out exactly like this?

The boogeyman is a mythical creature or imaginary being often depicted as a sinister figure used to scare children. It's commonly associated with hiding in closets, under beds, or in dark places, waiting to harm or frighten children who misbehave or disobey their parents. The concept of the boogeyman varies across different cultures, but it typically serves as a cautionary tale to encourage good behavior in children.

What did Jill see that made her equate the entity that took her brother as the boogeyman rather than just a bad man? Jill was only 2 years old at the time of the abduction so her account of the story rightfully should be taken with a grain of salt. It does however make you wonder, was there some paranormal quality about the person that took Billy that caused her to use the phrase the “boogeyman”?

In this hypothetical scenario, a malevolent spirit or supernatural being, possibly resembling the archetype of the boogeyman, could have targeted Billy while he was playing outside. Perhaps drawn to his innocence or vulnerable state, the entity could have seized the opportunity to snatch Billy away when his mother’s attention was diverted.

It might have used its otherworldly abilities to cloak its actions from onlookers, allowing it to spirit Billy away unnoticed by anyone except his pure minded sister. Once in its grasp, the entity could have transported Billy to another realm or dimension beyond human perception, where conventional search efforts would prove futile.

Throughout history, there have been many accounts of mysterious disappearances attributed to supernatural entities or unexplained phenomena. While it is more likely that Billy was abducted by a human being, we can never know for sure exactly what happened.

If indeed it was the "Boogeyman" at fault, we could expect the disappearance of Billy Jones Jr. to have played out exactly as it did.
