MK-ULTRA: Verified Government Mind Control Operation

Project MK-Ultra was an experimental program undertaken by the CIA in the USA which experimented on humans without their consent. The experiments used drugs such as LSD during interrogations to weaken individuals will and force them to confess through torture and mind manipulation.

In addition to using drugs, MK-Ultra had many methods to manipulate its subjects’ mental states and brain functions. The program made use of hypnosis, electric shocks, sensory deprivation, social isolation and sexual and verbal abuse in addition to other forms of torture.

MK-Ultra was started on the order of CIA director Allen Dulles on April 13, 1953 and headed by Dr. Sidney Gottlieb. The program was intended to compete with alleged Chinese, Russian , and North Korean use of brainwashing techniques on American prisoners of war in Korea. The CIA wanted to be able to use similar techniques on their own prisoners. The CIA was also hoping to able to manipulate leaders in enemy countries with such techniques, and would later participate in several schemes attempting to drug Fidel Castro of Cuba.

Because most of the MKULTRA records were deliberately destroyed in 1972 by order of the Director Richard Helms, it is impossible to have a complete knowledge of the entire MK-Ultra program which consisted of more than 150 research projects and related CIA programs.

The experiments were often sadistic. Victims were tortured by locking them in sensory deprivation chambers while under the psychedelic influence of LSD, or to make recordings of psychiatric patients’ talk therapy sessions, and then play the most embarrassing segments from them on repeat through headphones they weren’t allowed to remove while being dosed with LSD.

There is no evidence that the CIA or any of the other countries involved has actually succeeded in controlling a person’s actions through the ‘mind control’ techniques that are known to have been attempted in the MK-Ultra projects. The destruction of all of the MK-Ultra files makes a full investigation of these claims impossible.

A secretive arrangement granted a percentage of the CIA budget to MK-Ultra. Dr. Sidney Gottlieb was given6% of the CIA’s annual operating budget in 1953. Working with the CIA, the DoD gave thousands of doses of hallucinogenics to ‘volunteer’ soldiers during the 50s and 60s.

The Army also used quinuclidinyl benzilate, a new hallucinogenic drug code-named BZ to test on the soldiers. Between 1953 and 1964, more than 149 different projects were undertaken using drug testing and other horrific methods on unwitting human subjects.

Justice William Brennan argued in 1987 that the government should not be protected from punishment and liability for serious violations of constitutional rights in spite of the need to preserve military discipline. The Nuremberg trials in 1947 involving doctors who performed experiments on un-consenting people deeply impressed upon the world that experimentation of this kind is morally and legally unacceptable.

The Nuremberg Code was established by the US Military Tribunal as a standard against which to judge German scientists who experimented with human subjects during World War II. In spite of this, military intelligence officials continued testing hallucinogens and other drugs on unsuspecting citizens.

Conspiracy theories

There are also conspiracy theories which claim that Sirhan B. Sirhan, the man who assassinated Robert F. Kennedy, was subject to MK-Ultra mind control at the time of the assassination. These claims are usually dismissed due to a lack of compelling evidence but such views are becoming more widespread. Sirhan’s most recent lawyer appeared on a radio show in 2003 citing evidence of this theory and claiming his client may be innocent after all.
