Soldier Teleports From Manila to Mexico City

Gil Perez Teleportation 1593

In 1593 it was reported that a Spanish soldier named Gil Perez teleported from Manila, Philippines to Mexico City in the blink of an eye. Is it possible this story is more than just an urban legend?

On the 24th October 1593 Perez was on sentry duty as a part of the Filipino Guardia Civil at the governor’s palace in Manila. He had been working long hours and suddenly felt faint, closing his eyes and leaning against a wall to steady himself. When he opened his eyes he immediately realised he wasn’t in the Philippines anymore. He asked a bystander where he was and they informed him that he was in Plaza Mayor, Mexico City. Perez couldn’t believe it and told nearby guards that he had received his orders for the morning on the 23rd of October in Manila so it was impossible for him to have travelled that far so quickly.

The guards were unsure what to do about this strange man in a strange army uniform so they brought him to the Viceroy of New Spain, Luis de Velasco. Perez told the authorities that moments before he arrived there, the Governor of the Philippines, Gomez Perez Dasmariñas had been killed by Chinese pirates. It was too soon to be able to verify this information as news would have to arrive by boat given the time period. Perez was placed in jail as a deserter and under the suspicion of working for Satan or using witchcraft to teleport.

Pérez was a good solider and cooperated with the authorities. After a few days he was determined to be a devout Christian and good citizen and was not charged with any crime. In spite of this the authorities weren’t sure what to do with him so they kept him in jail until they could make a decision.

Two months later, news from the Philippines arrived by ship confirming what the governor of the Philippines had indeed been killed by Chinese pirates on the 23rd of October. Several witnesses confirmed that Gil Perez had indeed been on duty in Manila just before arriving in Mexico with one passenger on the ship recognizing Perez and confirming she had seen him in Manilla on October 23rd. Gil Perez eventually returned to the Philippines and returned to his position as a palace guard.

Theories

  • Several writers such as Morris K. Jessup and Brinsley Le Poer Trench have suggested that Perez was abducted by a UFO and then put back far away with his memory of the event being wiped.

  • Other writers such as Colin Wilson and Gary Blackwood believe Perez somehow teleported from Manila to Mexico City.

Perez never had anything of the sort happen to him again so the experiment could not be repeated for further investigation. It is also possible that none of this is true at all or is highly exaggerated. Regardless it makes for a great story and food for thought.
