The Mysterious Davelis Cave

Twenty five miles north of Athens on the side of the Penteli mountain lies a cave filled with mysteries and secrets. It has been said that in this cave water flows uphill, electronics shut down and many explorers who have ventured in have never been seen again. Is there something paranormal going on in Davelis Cave?

The cave was initially discovered by Greek miners in the 5th century who were looking for marble for construction purposes. It became known as Davelis cave after a bandit named Davelis is said to have chosen this cave as a hideout and left some great treasure buried within. It consists of a complex system of tunnels running through the mountain coming together at the centre where a large pool of water is located.

Many religious groups hold the cave to be significant due to the strange phenomena that occur there. Worshippers of Pan held rituals within the cave leaving pottery depicting Pan and his nymphs. In the middle ages the site was revered by Christian hermits who built a church at the entrance to the cave, dedicating it to Saint Spyridon and Saint Nicholas. The cave is believed to have been used by other occultists even to this day.

Strange Phenomena

There have been many reports of paranormal activity within Davelis cave. Some people report their phones and other electronic devices suddenly powering off and not turning back on while inside the cave. Others have seen water flowing uphill or flowing in different directions on different days. One group of visitors reported a swirling mist hovering around the entrance to the cave. Several adventures have reportedly entered the cave and never been seen again.

The Greek government became alarmed by the mysterious happenings at the cave and closed the site to the general public during the 1980’s. Heavy machinery and explosives were observed digging deeper into the mountain. Who made the decision to undergo this work and why is hidden from the public apart from the government saying it was for safety reasons. All of this work stopped suddenly in the late 1980’s leaving behind numerous pieces of machinery and strangely a stockpile of cancer drugs. Some tunnels now lead to dead ends and others have been sealed off entirely.

A team of ghost hunters explored the cave in 2015 lead by Dimitrios Makridopoulos. Using a spirit box they captured sounds of what appeared to be angelic children chanting in an ancient Greek language.
