Barbatos: The Demon Who Speaks to Animals
Barbatos is the 8th demon in the Lesser Key of Solomon who is said to be able to grant the ability to speak to animals.
Who is Barbatos?
Barbatos is listed as the 8th demon in the 72 demons in "The Lesser Key of Solomon". He's considered a Duke and is said to show up when the sun is in Sagittarius.
He brings along four kings and their entourage when summoned. He gives the ability to understand animal language, reveals hidden treasures, predicts the future and past, and helps resolve conflicts between friends and the powerful. He leads 30 legions of spirits and was once part of the Virtues angelic group.
In "The Grand Grimoire", Barbatos is listed as the 6th of 18 spirits serving the 7 superiors, and is under the command of Satanachia along with Pruslas and Aamon.
The Infernal Dictionary by Jacques Auguste Simon Collin de Plancy describes Barbatos as follows:
“Barbatos, great and powerful demon, count-duke in the underworld, a type of Robin Hood; he is shown in the form of an archer or a hunter; He is found in forests.
Four kings sound the horn in front of him. He's acquired the knowledge to divine the speaking of birds, the roar of bulls, dogs barking and screaming various animals.
He knows the locations of buried treasures, say magicians. He reconciles quarreled friends. This demon, who was once of the order of Virtues of Heaven or that of dominions, is reduced today to commanding thirty hellish legions. He knows the past and the future”
