Doomsday 2026: Predictions from Science and Religion
will doomsday happen in 2026?
Life in our world seems to be getting more and more difficult all the time with wars, famines, pandemics and global warming all threatening our way of life. Sometimes it feels like maybe we don’t have much time left before something wipes out our civilisation.
A scientific paper posted in Science magazine in 1960 predicted that our global population would no longer be able to sustain itself from the 13th November 2026.
A religious organization called the Messiah Foundation also believe we will be wiped out in 2026, not by our own doing but by the impact of a giant asteroid. Is it possible that there could be some factual basis to these predictions?
An article titled “Doomsday: Friday, 13 November, A.D. 2026: At this date human population will approach infinity if it grows as it has grown in the last two millennia” appeared in Science magazine in 1960. The authors of the article Heinz von Foerster and his colleagues P. M. Mora and L. W. Amiot predicted that human population growth would be come infinite by the 13th of November 2026.
They created a formula from past population growth figures and used this to predict population growth from 1960 onwards. Using the past figures to extrapolate the time it would take for the population to double by 2026 the doubling time became zero meaning that the population would become impossibly large.
Critics argue that the paper did not take into account variables such as the gestation time of 9 months or events that could cause large amounts of death such as wars or pandemics.
The Messiah Foundation is a religious organization whos beliefs are a mish mash of a number of religions including Hinduism, Christianity and Islam. Their main focus is the belief that the world is in a twilight stage and will soon be ending in a giant cataclysm when Earth is impacted by an asteroid.
Followers believe that following the teachings of their guru Gohar Shahi will help people to survive these end times. Shahi predicted many things in his book “The Religion of God” including this incoming asteroid.
Followers claim this has also been seen by scientists but they have chosen not to release this information to the public to avoid panic.
Regardless of how seriously we take these particular claims of doom for 2026 it does seem like our world is on a path to disaster. Climate change is causing severe and frequent natural disasters and decimating entire ecosystems. Political systems are becoming more extreme and polarized leading to a rise in fascism. The COVID19 pandemic caused millions of deaths and has pushed healthcare systems to their limits globally.
As well as all of these internal threats we are vulnerable to events from space such as solar storms and asteroids which could create havoc on earth. We can’t know for sure what is going to happen to us in the coming years. All we can do is take it one day at a time, hold our loved ones close and try to live the best lives we can.
