The Bite of 87 was an event that occurred in the lore of the indie videogame Five Nights at Freddy’s.
Five Nights at Freddy’s is an indie horror video game created by Scott Cawthorn that was released in 2014. The game involves watching CCTV cameras to avoid getting slaughtered by evil animatronic pizza place mascots that come alive at night time.
The Bite of 87 was an event in the history of the game’s universe that led to the downfall of Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, the restaurant in which the game takes place. During the Bite of 87 an animatronic is believed to have malfunctioned and bitten a child, causing the child to lose the frontal lobe of their brain. Because of this incident the mascots were locked away during the day and allowed to roam at night.
How Did the Bite of 87 become a meme?
The event came to be known outside of the videogame when it appeared in a meme format. The meme consisted of a video of youtuber Markiplier reacting to a cutscene in Five Nights a Freddy’s 4 which showed an event called The Bite of 83. Markiplier is shocked and calls out to the audience asking ‘was that the Bite of 87 from Five Nights at Freddy's 2’?
This fairly obscure moment became a very popular meme format when another youtuber attached the footage to an anime video of a character eating another person.
