While on a boys trip to Bulgaria, German man Lars Mittank disappeared after fleeing from the airport while yelling "I don't want to die here. I have to get out of here." What happened to Lars Mittank?

Lars and his friends travelled to Bulgaria to attend the football world cup in 2014. One night while out partying Lars got into a fight with some other football fans and suffered and was slapped in the head, suffering a burst eardrum.
He went to see a local doctor who told him it would be unsafe to fly in his condition. Lars told his friends to go home without him and that he would fly back in a few days once his ear and recovered.
In the days following the departure of his friends Lars began to behave strangely. He checked into a cheap hotel and called his mother in the middle of the night telling her to cancel his credit cards. Lars called his mother repeatedly telling her four men were chasing him. Lars was also concerned about the active ingredients in the antibiotics he had been prescribed by the doctor for his injury.
Lars eventually went to the airport and visited the airport doctor to make sure he was ok to fly. The doctor who saw him said he appeared very agitated but told Lars he would be ok to fly. Lars didn’t want to leave the doctor’s office until a construction worker suddenly entered the room. Lars yelled "I don't want to die here! I have to get out of here!" before running from the airport and into a nearby forest. He left behind his phone, wallet, passport and all of his other belongings.

Lars Mittank’s friends and family began a desperate search to find him. Despite their great efforts Lars has not been seen since. There have been some reported sightings of Lars living as a homeless man in Bulgaria and hitchhiking around the country but these have not been able to be confirmed.
Theories about what happened to Lars Mittank
It is possible that the medication Lars was taking caused him to have some kind of psychotic break. He was prescribed the antibiotic Cefprozil which has been known to cause psychosis as a rare side effect. Some reports state that Lars never filled his prescriptions so maybe this isn’t the case.
Lars had no history of mental illness prior to his disappearance. Perhaps he had a sudden onset of schizophrenia or some other mental illness that caused him to behave erratically.
Perhaps Lars was actually being chased by real people who eventually caught up with him in the forest.
Lars’ mother believes he is still alive and has possibly lost his memory. We sincerely hope this case can soon be resolved and Lars will be reunited with his loved ones.
